A pearl of an excerpt treat for you...

In my previous post today, I mentioned that the ancient Egyptians dissolved pearls in a cup of wine, then drank the mixture as an aphrodisiac. I'd much rather wear my pearls than drink them (LOL!) so while I'm scrounging around in my jewelry box, looking for that strand of perfect pearls, check out this 'pearl' of an excerpt treat for you from...

Crystal grabbed her sketchpad and began to draw, her pencil strokes swift as a brooch resembling a tree of branches took shape on the paper, the leaves studded with a myriad of gemstones - golden citrines, deep green emeralds and garnets. She smiled when she thought of how nice the brooch would look on Seth’s Aunt Clarice.
She flipped the page, intent on drawing a design for a matching bracelet when her strokes quickened, the pencil flying across the page, as if some unseen force guided her hand. A large bird took shape on Crystal’s sketch pad, its wings spread wide. She watched the bird take flight, soaring high into the air. Oh, how she wished she could follow it…to be free of her cursed crystal tears…to be free of the wretched headaches that plagued her of late.
Her pencil strokes changed, her swift movements fashioning the image of a man…a tall, dark, mysterious man…
“Your artistic talents are eclipsed by your ethereal beauty.”
Crystal looked up to see the subject of her drawing standing directly in front of her. She sucked in a breath as she took in the sight of him, dressed in black trousers that outlined his lean hips. Her face warmed at the direction of her thoughts, but she couldn’t stop her eyes from traveling up to his wide chest outlined by a snug black t-shirt.
“Or perhaps it’s the other way around. Perhaps,” he reached out to trail one long finger across her chin then dropped his hand. “Perhaps it’s your beauty that eclipses all else.”
Her stomach fluttered as though hundreds of tiny little butterflies beat their wings inside her belly. His words melted the icy recess of her heart, where she held her emotions in check. How she longed to cry a woman’s tears, to feel human emotion, bad or good. She held back, knowing that if she allowed herself to be taken in by his magnetism she left her heart wide open for hurt. But her heart swelled, his words filling her with warmth, her traitorous eyes stinging. How long had it been since she got close enough to a man to be both turned-on and…charmed?
Crystal had to divert her thoughts so she glanced at his upper right arm where a tattoo of a black hawk lay emblazoned against his skin. She managed to pull her eyes away from the large bird tattoo to view his muscular forearms, where a fine smattering of dark hair glistened against his olive, sun-kissed skin. Crystal felt hot all over. Her body, as well as the tips of her breasts, swelled with desire. The pencil she had sketched with slipped from her fingers. It tumbled to the floor, along with her pad. She bent to retrieve the pad and pencil, but Anthony beat her to it.
He gazed at her sketch of his ring. “I’m sorry Crystal, but you can’t have this design.” He placed the sketchpad on the counter in front of her. “The ring’s been in my family for generations.”
She blew out a shaky breath. “I-I have no intention of copying the design.”
He raised one dark silky brow and smiled as he viewed the sketch of himself. “And just what do you intend to do with that?”
Think, Crystal, think!
She set her chin at a defiant angle, hoping he didn’t catch the tremble she felt in her jaw. “It’s for a poster.”
He beetled his brows. “A poster?”
“Yes, I…” She grabbed the pad, placing it under the counter. “I’m designing a poster for the lobby to promote your performance.”
He leaned a hip against the counter and folded his arms across his chest, smiling a rakish grin. “I would have thought my publicist would have sent more than enough brochures and…posters.”
She shrugged. “Clarice asked me t-to sketch you.” Crystal hoped lightening wouldn’t strike her for the lie she had just told.
He raised a brow. “She’s a very talented lady, I’m surprised she didn’t sketch me herself.” He dropped his arms to his sides, snagging her hand in his. Crystal’s pulse skidded out of control when he ran his thumb across the back of her hand. “Perhaps you just wanted me all to yourself.”
She turned away, keeping her trembling hands busy by shuffling papers near the cash register. Crystal glanced at her charcoal pencil that lay on the glass countertop. In the next instant, it started to spin slowly then it picked up speed. It stopped abruptly, sliding across the glass to rest by her hand.
Her eyes flew to Anthony’s. Their small, red centers glowed.
She swallowed as she gazed down at the pencil, which now lay still. Picking it up, she held the pencil in her fingers, feeling heat pour into their tips. “H-how did you do that?”
Anthony replied. “A magician’s trick.”
Crystal raised one brow. “That’s some trick.”
He smiled, revealing a mouth full of white, even teeth. “A simple trick of telekinesis. Usually, I make a pen jump out of wineglass, then shatter the glass, but…” he glanced around, his silver eyes settling on the broken, taped end of her jewelry counter. “I think we’ve had enough glass shattering around here.”
Crystal laughed, the sound hard and brittle as she recalled her encounter with the mysterious Lady in White. “Yes, quite enough.”
He grinned. “I’m renowned for my skill of using my mind to move inanimate objects.”
She shook her head, wondering at his skills at other things, too, her heart fluttering at the thought. “Did you have a reason for coming into my shop today?”
“Absolutely.” He walked over to the jewelry case the near the cash register. “I see you have some lovely pearls in there.” Anthony pointed at the cases containing Crystal’s pearl jewelry designs.
Crystal let go of a steadying breath and walked over to where Anthony stood. Just one look at his amazing silver eyes made her want to retreat back behind the counter as her body vibrated with the most delicious sensations. She needed to keep a great deal of distance between her and this dark, sensual sorcerer.
Crystal walked behind the counter containing the pearl displays. “What can I show you, Mr. Zodan?”
He leaned both elbows on the counter, cupping his sculpted chin in the palm of his hand. “There’s a lot you can show me, Crystal.” He glanced up and smiled. “But for now, I’m interested in that necklace.” Anthony pointed to a necklace fashioned of black, gray and white pearls, diamonds centered between each smooth stone.
Crystal was lost as she gazed into his eyes, seeing a vision of her and Anthony entwined together on a bed, his long, hard body covering hers. She felt a stirring inside her belly. Desire pooled low between her legs, making her clit throb, the pulsing beat vibrating throughout her entire body.
She removed the necklace from the satin lined display box. “It’s a lovely piece.” Crystal told him as she draped the pearl necklace across her palm, willing her hand to remain steady.
“Exquisite,” he agreed, his voice soft and deep. But he wasn’t looking at the pearls - he was gazing at her.
“I’m sure the lucky recipient will enjoy them very much,” Crystal’s heart beat wildly.
“I’m sure she will.” He took the necklace from her, laying it across his large palm.
She felt a small stab of envy as she thought about the woman Anthony Zodan would give the lovely necklace to – some starlet or hot female celebrity, she imagined.
“Pearls are fragile,” Crystal told him. “Whoever you’re giving them to…” His eyes locked with hers once more. “…shouldn’t use hairspray when wearing them and,” she tucked some hair behind one of her ears, her fingers trembling. “…they shouldn’t store them in any kind of plastic bag or container. Plastic emits a chemical that could erode them. I’ll give you a special ‘pearl folder’ – it’s satin-lined, made just to hold pearls.”
He continued to hold the pearls in his hand, his silver eyes softening to that dove-gray color she loved. “Eastern cultures believe pearls symbolize spirituality and…purity.”
“Well, then,” she schooled her features, hoping to mask the unsettling feel of the rapid beating of her pulse. “If you’re taking these…”
“The bracelet and earrings, too.”
He didn’t even ask the price! She did a swift, mental calculation…
Ten thousand dollars.
She blew out a breath. “All right. I’ll make sure to give you pearl envelopes to fit all three pieces.”
He raised a brow and grinned. “Aren’t you going to give me a deal like you gave that young man?”
Crystal frowned, thinking Anthony had seen and heard her entire conversation with Jamie …
Or did he?
She peeked at him beneath her lowered lashes, as she withdrew the pieces from the display boxes. There had been no one in the shop besides her and Jamie at the time…
Her heart started to pound.
The Amazing Zodan had simply…appeared. She hadn’t even heard the bell ring…
Just like when the Lady in White had paid her a visit.
Oh…this was crazy!
She gave her mind a mental shake to clear it of her insane thoughts.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t haggle with customers.”
He shrugged. “That’s fine with me. I didn’t come here to haggle.”
Crystal made quick work of gift-wrapping everything as Anthony wrote her a check for the full amount.
Her hands shook as she handed him the gift bags, her palms growing moist as she reached for the check. He placed his hand over hers. “The purpose of my visit to Crystal Jewelers this morning is two-fold.”
“Really?” Crystal tried to put a casual note in her voice. “What’s the other reason?” She opened the cash register and placed his check in the bottom of the drawer. Then she closed it, ripping the receipt from the top, placing it in one of the gift bags. “I’ve also given you a certificate of authenticity. It’s in the bag with the necklace.”
“Thanks.” He angled his head. “And to answer your question…I came to see how you were feeling and to ask you to lunch. We had a very rocky start, you and I. Maybe we can begin again.”
Her heart thumped against her breastbone. Crystal swore anyone, including him, could see it beat through her chest.
“That was very kind of you,” she replied in a steady voice, feeling anything but. “I’m quite all right.”
He shook his head and frowned. “You seemed quite ill the other day.”
“I’m fine now,” she snapped. Gentling her voice, she said, “Thank you for your concern.”
He raised one dark brow. “Well?”
“What?” She frowned.
“How about dining with me this afternoon? We could take a drive. Visit our childhood haunts, talk about old times.”
“Why don’t you take the lucky recipient of the pearls?” Was that her voice that sounded so…waspish?
“She already has a date.”
“Uh huh.” She replied, feeling mulish. “I’m sure it’s…”
“My father.” He pulled out a billfold from his trouser pocket, withdrawing a photograph. “As a matter of fact, she’s had the same date with him for the last forty years. This is a picture taken at their fortieth wedding anniversary.”
Crystal took the picture from his outstretched hand.
“That’s my mother and father in the center.”
She nodded as she gazed at his mother…he looked like her, both possessing those amazing silver-colored eyes and dark hair…
There was so much she never bothered to learn about Anthony when they were in school. She usually avoided him for a lot of the kids labeled him a freak, just like her, a mirror image of herself.
Crystal didn’t want or need to be reminded of her uniqueness.
She glanced at the picture again. His father’s dark, wavy hair and dark eyes greeted her.
The happy couple sat surrounded by Anthony and a young, dark-haired woman and man, each holding a young child. Three other men, all resembling Anthony, flanked them on either side.
“My sister and her family,” he pointed at the young, dark-haired woman, the man standing next to her, and the children. “The other three bruisers are my younger brothers. They were a few years behind us in school.”
She felt a pang in her chest…he had a family. A very happy-looking family.
“So, as you can see, I can’t very well ask the recipient of these lovely pearl creations to join me.” He placed the picture back in the billfold then placed the billfold back in his trouser pocket.
“No,” she murmured, feeling small and stupid about her earlier comment. “I guess you can’t.”
“My father, Anthony Cavalli Senior, is a hot-blooded, jealous kind of guy.” He grinned. “He wouldn’t stand for anyone taking his woman from him.”
“Wait a minute,” Crystal frowned. “How come you always used the name ‘Zodan’?”
“It’s actually my mother’s maiden name. I always liked it.” He smiled. “And it pissed off my dad no end to use it. You know how that is when you’re a teenager, you always want to annoy the hell out of your parents.”
She felt another pang in her chest as she thought about her own parents. Crystal wished they were around now, so that she could piss them off royally on a daily basis.
But then again, she was sort of glad that they weren’t around to see that her damned headaches grew steadily worse, until there were times, nothing helped…
She really had to get into town and see Dr. Crawford.
“Zodan is fitting to use as a stage name because my mother comes from a long-line of witches.”
The sound of Anthony’s deep voice snapped her out of her reverie. Crystal’s eyes widened. “Your mother is a witch?”
He laughed; his chuckle deep. “No. But her ancestors were. I enjoy the reaction I get when I tell people that.” His face turned serious. “Some of her ancestors died during the witch hunts here on Long Island.”
Crystal drew her brows together. “Nothing like that happened here on Long Island.”
“They burned quite a few people here as witches back in the seventeenth century. You can read all about it on my website.”
The thought of a human burning alive made Crystal shudder.
Anthony reached out and grabbed her shoulders, rubbing his hands up and down her bare arms. “I’m sorry,” he murmured close to her ear. “I scared you, didn’t I? I shouldn’t have said anything.” He continued to gently rub her icy arms, trailing his fingers across her skin.
Heat washed over her body at his touch. She stepped out of his grasp, thinking she’d go up in flames, like one of his ancestors, if he continued.
Anthony dropped his hands to his sides, placing them in his pockets. “Are you free for lunch? Can you spare an afternoon?” A hopeful look crossed his features.
Maybe she was seeing things again, but for just an instant, it seemed as though her answer was very important to him…
Okay, yeah, well, she could dream, couldn’t she?
“Well?” he raised one brow. “Think you’d like that?”
Like it?
Oh, no, she had lots to do, she had…
She gazed at Anthony’s handsome face, at his lush, full upper lip. Those lips had caressed hers, made her burn for more…
Okay, so maybe she could get Serena to work in the shop…she said she’d help if Crystal was ever in a bind…
Like now. She wanted to be with this dark sorcerer…
More than she cared to admit.
Crystal raised one brow. “Are you sure you want to go to lunch with a woman who claims to see ghosts?”
He nodded, his silvery eyes intense. “Yes, and believe it or not, I’d like to hear more of your…experience.”
For some reason, she got the distinct impression he wasn’t talking about her experience with the Lady in White. Her traitorous body wanted more than just lunch and a tour of Long Island’s gold coast and their familiar teenage hangouts with Anthony Zodan…
She wanted much more.
“And we can discuss that trick you do with your eyes.”
“It’s not a trick,” she snapped. “I-I’ve had that problem since I was little.” Her lips trembled. She felt the start of tears. Damn him, anyway! “Don’t think for one second that I conjure up those crystal tears like you conjure rabbits out of a hat.”
He shook his head, giving her a small smile. “I don’t pull rabbits out of hats. That’s an old, played-out trick.”
She stacked some boxes, willing her hands to remain steady. His larger, warm palm covered the top of one of her hands. “I’m sorry, angel,” he said quietly. “The last thing I want to do is argue.” He raised her chin with the tip of his index finger. “Please, have lunch with me. No matter what else you might think of me, I might as well be a stranger to Long Island, for I’ve been away so long, from it…and you.”
Her eyes flew to his.
“I want to feel home again and,” he hesitated for just a second. “…and I’d like to get to know you better.”
She swallowed around a lump in her throat when he mentioned home and her in the same breath. “I’ll see if someone can cover for me.”
He grabbed the bags from the counter. In the next instant, her lips buzzed, her mouth softening as Anthony’s fused with hers. She hadn’t seen him move, wasn’t aware of anything but the feel of his mouth as it melded with her lips.
“Sweet,” he murmured. “So sweet.”
She swayed, her body humming, her lips tingling. She shut her eyes, as the most delicious sensations pulsed through her…
When she opened them a few seconds later, the Amazing Zodan had disappeared.
She hadn’t heard him leave - just like she hadn’t heard him enter.
A sweet odor drifted by her nose…
Roses.
She glanced down at the counter.
One dozen white roses lay there, the stems completely devoid of thorns, their perfect petals gleaming under the light.

MAGIC MAN...available January 24, 2008 from www.ResplendencePublishing.com

Have a Sensual New Year...

This New Year, inspire lust instead of luck.

Write your SO a love letter. Don't email it and don't mail it...just leave it by his/her bedside table. In that letter, list some sensual New Year's resolutions - like a fantasy you'd like to share with your lover. Find one new aphrodisiac, whether it be a food or whispered word, something that will spark new passion.

The ancient Egyptians were great believers in the power of aphrodisiacs...

Lettuce was thought to be the favourite food of the fertility god, Min . He was depicted as a god with an erect penis, wearing a feathered crown and carrying a flail. Lettuce was his sacred plant, and an aphrodisiac to the ancient Egyptians - this particular species of lettuce was tall, straight and secreted a milky substance when pressed!

Another aphrodisiac was the onion. They were forbidden to the priests who had vowed celibacy, for fear that their passion might take over, and that they might desecrate themselves!
Fennel, ginger, pomegranates, coriander in wine and radishes mixed with honey were thought to have aphrodisiac qualities, too.

The Lotus was also a symbol of sexuality, as well as immortality and health. It was possibly even a narcotic that the Egyptians used, but it was more likely to be a sexual stimulant.

Some of the more unusual aphrodisiacs included pearls dissolved in a cup of wine, baboon faces added to aphrodisiac ointments!

LOL - onions and babboon faces don't sound too romantic to me, but I suppose to the ancient Egyptians, they inspired many a romantic night. And I think I'll wear my pearls, instead of dissolving them in wine (hmmmm...maybe I'll wear nothing but pearls tonight!).

Have a wonderful, sensual New Year, everyone. Stay safe this New Year's Eve.

Aphrodisiacs...Some interesting history

Aphrodisiac Foods Recipe Links
Some Interesting History
Source: Cambridge World History of Food
Aphrodisiacs were first sought out as a remedy for various sexual anxieties including fears of inadequate performance as well as a need to increase fertility. Procreation was an important moral and religious issue and aphrodisiacs were sought to insure both male and female potency. Why Certain Foods? In ancient times a distinction was made between a substance that increased fertility versus one that simply increased sex drive. One of the key issues in early times was nutrition. Food was not so readily available as it is today. Undernourishment creates a loss of libido as well as reduces fertility rates. Substances that "by nature" represent "seed or semen" such as bulbs, eggs, snails" were considered inherently to have sexual powers. Other types of foods were considered stimulating by their "physical resemblance to genitalia" It's important to realize these food substances were identified (documented) by the likes of Pliny and Dioscordes (ancient Greeks) first century AD and later by Paul of Aegina from the seventh century. Later more credence was given to foods that "satisfied dietary gratification". Other foods deemed to have these aphrodisiac qualities were derived from mythology. Aphrodite, the love goddess was said to consider "sparrows" sacred because of their "amorous nature" and for that reason were included in various aphrodisiac brews.
There was not always agreement upon what foods were actually aphrodisiacs or "anaphrodisiacs" (decrease potency). But the ancient list included Anise, basil, carrot, salvia, gladiolus root, orchid bulbs, pistachio nuts, rocket (arugula), sage, sea fennel, turnips, skink flesh (a type of lizard) and river snails. The ancients suggested you steer clear of dill, lentil, lettuce, watercress, rue, and water lily.

*****
Damn, what was wrong with her? She cradled her head in her hands. This nut job held her captive and all she could think about was swimming?
She was losing her mind…
Five minutes later, Alex came back, a tray in one hand. He maneuvered through the door, placing the tray containing a large covered dish, on the small table next to the bed. A delicious odor drifted by her nose. She sniffed, inhaling the sweet fragrance of vanilla.
Her stomach growled in response. Grace felt the heat rush to her cheeks.
“Hungry?”
She sighed. “I ate breakfast yesterday, but then uh,” she folded her arms across her breasts, yanking the sheet up when it slipped. It sort of ruined the effect when she saw Alex grin. “I was abducted.”
He ignored her attempt at sarcasm…but not her body. His eyes scanned her chest and neck, his cool, gray gaze roaming over every part of her.
“What’s in there?” she nodded towards the covered plate on the tray.
“French toast, made with Tahitian vanilla beans.”
She rolled her eyes. “Is this the part where I’m supposed to say, ‘Gee, all this and he cooks, too?’” Grace swept her hand out in front of her.
Alex grabbed her hand, placing a gentle kiss on her fingers. “Tahitian vanilla is a very strong aphrodisiac.”
She slipped her hand from his, annoyed that those tiny, gentle kisses wreaked havoc on her body. She felt them down to the tips of her toes, the tingling sensation traveling up her legs, to her clit.
Her eyes widenend. “Oh, I get it. So that,” she aimed thumb at the covered plate, “is part of your great challenge? You think I’m going to get all hot and bothered by eating some French toast?” She laughed, the sound snide. “You’re dreaming.”
He uncovered the dish and lifted the plate.
Grace’s mouth watered when she saw four perfect slices of eggy, browned French toast, the heady vanilla odor making her head swim…and her stomach growl again.
“Aphrodisiacs have cumulative powers, like vanilla, for instance. It doesn’t happen over night, it takes a few days.”
“Just how long is this challenge going to be?”
His grin turned wicked. “As long as it takes. Until you’re so turned on,” she shifted in the bed, his deep, languid voice sending a maelstrom of liquid heat to the little nubbin between her legs. “Until you’re so hot for me,” she felt herself flush all over. “Until you’re so wet and excited, that you want me.”
She swallowed, hard. Grace had talked that kind of dirty talk to the men she facilititated, but no one ever spoke that way to her…and not like that! Alex’s eyes, glowed, their gray icy color turning into molten silver.
“If you believe that, you’re really out of your head.” She reached over to grab the plate from his hands.
“Uh, uh.” He held it away. “I’m going to feed you.”
Grace scowled. “That’s ridiculous. I’ll feed myself.”
“No,” his tone brooked no argument. “I’m going to feed you.”
She threw up her hands, but the damned sheet slipped…again. Grabbing it, she hiked it up to her chin. “Go ahead.”
Alex laughed. “Ah, Grace. I’m going to enjoy this.”
He drew one leg up and onto the bed, balancing the plate on his thigh. Using the side of the fork, he cut a little piece of the French toast and dipped it in syrup. Placing the piece of bread by her lips, Grace licked it, sliding the tip of her tongue across her lower lip, then the top one, catching the drop of syrup that clung there.
“This isn’t maple syrup,” she mused, enjoying the wonderful taste and feel of the sweet syrup in her mouth.
“No, its vanilla bean simply syrup. Many ancient people used it as a sort of aphrodisiac tonic.”
“They must have been very healthy people.” Grace reached up and swiped another piece of the French toast from the fork, sliding her slips slowly down the tines, until the piece of bread entered her mouth.
Alex’s breathing turned ragged.
She chewed slowly and swallowed, savoring the delicious, eggy sweetness on her tongue. He continued to feed her, bit by delicious bit. Grace’s body relaxed, each tense muscle unwinding, stretching, her edgy nerves soothed by Alex’s ministrations. Each time he lifted the fork, her pulse raced just a bit, in anticipation of the delicious morsel he held out on the narrow tines.
Alex fed her until the plate lay empty, every crumb, every drop of syrup devoured by Grace’s greedy palate.
He leaned over and put the plate back on the tray while Grace snuggled under a blanket, her hunger for food satisfied…
Her hunger for Alex…that was an entirely different matter...

SPICES AS APHRODISIACS

SPICES AS APHRODISIACS
The heady aromas of expensive, exotic spices ensured that they would offer a voluptuously stimulating environment for invigoration of romantic encounters. In the Old Testament's the Song of Solomon, Proverbs and Psalms romantic verses extolled the sensory excitement offered by cinnamon, calamus, myrrh, saffron and other perfumed smells from fragrant spices. In Greece and Rome, spices were included in antidotes against poisons and venoms but their potent, life-restoring virtues earned them a heady reputation of being essential every-night aphrodisiacs; indeed, in Rome the word cinnamon was equivalent to the current use of "sweetheart" or "darling". The Romans also embraced the phytochemical concept of the biblical lover's spicy enticement: "Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe, or to a young hart, upon the mountains of spices." (Song of Solomon 8,14); "I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon. Come let us take our fill of love till morning." (Proverbs 7, 17-18). The Arabs had their "Perfumed Garden" and the Hindus their "Kama Sutra", each of which extolled favored spices such as nutmeg, cloves, galangal, cardamon and ginger, while the Romans came to favor cinnamon and pepper, and the Chinese were most impressed with ginger.
Over the years, spices have offered the luxury of intriguing tastes, impressive incenses and delightful perfumes, and, as tools of the rich, they have always been included in recipes for improving sexual potency. It is of interest that the equivalent of the multi-herb antidote against all poisons that was concocted by King Mithridates VI, who ruled over ancient Turkey , is still on sale in a modern reformulation in that country (See section on Medical Use of Spices). It now carries suggestive names such as "Sultan's Paste".
Proprietary luxuries of this type, that consist of several dozen herbs and spices, are currently promoted as aphrodisiacs and tonics rather than as antidotes against poisoning, or as incenses, for appeasing the gods in religious ceremonies. Undoubtedly, spicy versions of these recipes that served the ancient pagan gods such as Priapus, Cupid, Venus, Eros, Pan and of course Aphrodite (the goddess who arose from sea foam - "aphros") continue to work their historic magic. Modern romances are catalyzed by spices and herbs which are called upon to provide symbolic and sensory support in luxurious perfumes, heady scents, and sensual aromatic cream or oil massages. However, it is of interest that the most appreciated of current aphrodisiacs is undoubtedly the New World's Aztec "food of the gods", the meso-American spice chocolate rather than the ancient and historic spices of Arabia and the Orient.
The essential oils and terpenoid alcohols of spices contribute to their smell, taste and tactile sensation. Thus, eugenol is found in cinnamon, clove and pimento; one of its medical qualities is a local anesthetic effect, which is utilized in dentistry. Menthol, from mints, has a cooling effect as well as a characteristic fresh taste and smell. Anise contains anethole, cinnamon produces cinnamaldehyde, mace contains myristin, and so on; all have specific pharmacologic effects that are generally mild. However, some - such as myristicin - are more potent, and large doses can result in harmful effects such as hallucinations.
A number of spice chemicals are shared with herbs and flowers. It is noteworthy that colorful flowers result in an experience of exciting color and smell, whereas most spices result in excitatory sensations of taste and smell without being particularly stimulating to the visual sense. There are some exceptions, including the crocus which is the source of saffron, and edible flowers such as nasturtium which can spice up a salad. Similarly, chile peppers and radishes can be visually exciting, whereas cinnamon bark and cardamon seeds are relatively dowdy.
The following spices have had a long reputation of having aphrodisiacal properties.
· Asafetida This has a foul smell, but in small amounts it can provide a sensual taste or smell. The same phenomenon applies to musk oil (from the musk ox) and castoreum (from the beaver), and perhaps to the secretions of the civet cat and the skunk: these agents can give a salty, animalistic, deeply erotic fragrant quality to a perfume when suitably diluted.
· Cardamon is popular in India and in Arabic cultures, and used to be employed by the Chinese court to give users a fragrant breath.
· Cloves and some other spices and herbs contain eugenol; its smell is fragrant and aromatic, and has long been considered as enhancing sexual feelings.
· Ginger contains gingerols, zingiberene and other characteristic agents that have made it a favored seductive flavor in Asiatic and Arabic herbal traditions.
· Mace and Nutmeg contain myristicin and similar compounds that are related to mescalin. In larger doses, nutmeg and mace can cause hallucinations, whereas in smaller amounts they are traditional aphrodisiacs.
· Pepper from India contains piperine: this pungent agent can stimulate sexual function, according to ancient beliefs.
· Saffron contains picrocrocin which is alleged to have the ability to cause erotic sensations.
· Vanilla contains the widely loved vanillin, whose taste and smell conjure up romantic feelings in the appropriate circumstances.
Other popular herbs that have been reported to have aphrodisiacal properties include garlic, mint, rosemary, sage and thyme. All these allegedly erotically stimulating agents have long been incorporated into cooking, incenses, rubs and other romantic sources for stimulation of sexual feeling. More recently, these and other herbs are utilized creatively in numerous massage oils and in incenses that are popularly utilized to improve sensations as a new-old form of therapy, with the modern title of aromatherapy.

For thousands of years, certain foods and drinks have been known to have qualities that contribute to the increase of sexual desire and improvement of sexual performance. The reliability of these foods and drinks, called aphrodisiacs, has been both challenged and heralded.

Named after Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of sexual love and beauty, the list of aphrodisiacs includes such foods as celery, garlic and fennel, among many others. Aphrodite was said to be born from the sea. That's why many types of seafood also are considered to be aphrodisiacs. Oysters perhaps are the most well known of all -- they contain high amounts of zinc that improve the sex drive.

The Food and Drug Administration in 1989 declared that there was no scientific proof that aphrodisiacs affect sex drive. It is reasoned, however, that because some foods known to be aphrodisiacs affect the body by increasing things like heart rate, they are thought to directly affect sexual desire. Perhaps they work as a placebo. The mind itself can be a powerful aphrodisiac!

Here is a list of foods that are considered to be aphrodisiacs. Try your own experiment on the effectiveness of aphrodisiacs by adding them to some dishes this Valentine's Day.

Caviar
Sturgeon eggs contain a large amount of vitamins and phosphorous. Try caviar with vodka for a real experience!

Celery
Celery has a long history of use as an aphrodisiac. It contains vitamins A, C, B, P and minerals. It is excellent for the muscles and liquefies the blood. But most celebrated as an aphrodisiac are the celery seeds. Crush them to spice bread or an oil-vinegar salad dressing.

Clove
One of the most powerful natural aphrodisiacs. It is also effective against mental and physical fatigue as well as memory loss. In essence form, take two or three drops in honey every day.

Fennel
Greeks and Hindus are those who believe that fennel is good for sex drive. The Greeks used the leaves and seeds in dishes and wore the leaves as crowns during festivities.

Ginger
For thousands of years, ginger has been used in drinks to excite the senses. If used in small amounts, it causes hot flushes and in large amounts, it irritates intestines.

Ginseng
This plant is a very powerful hormonal stimulant. It is reported that ginseng gives people enough sexual energy to last quite a while.

Nutmeg
While nutmeg is not as effective on women, its powers definitely are not wasted on men.

Chili
With a large amount of vitamin C, red, green and Cayenne pepper chilies stimulate circulation, which is why it is considered to be a potent aphrodisiac.

Chickpeas
For men, chickpeas are a powerful aphrodisiac. Hummus, anyone?

Horseradish
It is said that horseradish pulp has aphrodisiac properties.

Saffron
While excessive doses causes uncontrollable laughter, saffron, the stigmas of the crocus flower, can be fun in other ways! It has stimulating properties on the erogenous zones and it has similar effects to that of hormones.

Vanilla
Vanilla's scent alone indirectly acts as a sexual stimulant. The bean itself can be used in recipes in hot chocolate as a great aphrodisiac. Add a couple drops of vanilla essence (extracted from real vanilla beans) to your bath for a pleasurable effect.

Asparagus
It has been reported that asparagus turns women off as much as it turns men on. It is a diuretic -- this stimulation for men is one reason why it is called an aphrodisiac. Another? Just look at it!

Walnuts
Ancient Romans threw walnuts instead of rice at weddings because they believed that walnuts held powers of fertility.

Grapes
Wine is not the only form in which grapes can hold aphrodisiac properties. Even unfermented grapes are thought to have stimulating properties.

Oysters
Probably the most well known of all aphrodisiacs, oysters are a healthy food that are rich in phosphorus, iodine and zinc, which is known to increase the sexual health of both men and women. Legend holds that Casanova ate 50 raw oysters every morning with the lady du jour. Chardonnay is a good match with oysters.

Power of Chickpeas

Behold, the Power of Chickpeas
(Chickpeas... with tahina sauce)
One of the most common and most delicious dishes to be found in Egypt and in the Middle East is Hummus bi-Tahina ~ mashed chickpeas with seasoning and sesame seed puree. Chickpeas are used in many dishes in this region, but served frequently as the mezze or appetizer course, to be scooped up with fresh pita or other local breads.
As Habeeb Salloum writes in his book, From the Lands of Figs and Olives:
Many believe that chickpeas increase the energy and sexual desires of both men and women. Shaykh ‘Umar Abu Mohammad, a 16th century North African Arab writer, in his book, The Perfect Garden, suggests chickpeas as a cure for impotence and as a first-rate sexual stimulant. In the eastern Arab lands, the peasants are convinced that chickpeas have qualities which give them the essential energy necessary for their lives of toil. As is often the case with folk wisdom, modern science supports such claims as least partially: chickpeas are a valuable source of both muscle-building proteins and energy rich carbohydrates.1
While we are leaving the testing of Hummus as an aphrodisiac up to you, here is our recipe. Adding candlelight and flowers will make any meal more romantic!
Hummus bi-Tahina
· 1 cup chickpeas
· 1 cup tahina sauce *
· 1 tablespoon lemon juice
· olive oil
· parsley leaves
· chili powder
· slices of lemon
Soak the dried chickpeas overnight. Drain, add fresh water, and simmer until tender, about 1 hour. Drain. Set aside a spoonful of whole chickpeas for decoration and mash or pound the rest. Add tahina sauce* and lemon juice to chickpeas and blend to a smooth paste. Sprinkle top with olive oil and garnish with whole chickpeas, finely chopped parsley, chili powder and slices of lemon (optional).
Variations: Canned chickpeas may be used and therefore omitting the soaking and simmering step. You may use a food processor or blender to make the puree. Being a local or baladi recipe, the amount of lemon juice may vary according to taste from 1 up to 6 tablespoons. However, I would recommend using fresh ingredients.
Tahina Sauce (Salatit tahina)
1 cup tahina (sesame seed puree, available in specialty food stores or the international section of large groceries)
1 ½ to 2 cups of water
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon vinegar
½ teaspoon cumin
1 small onion, chopped
3-5 crushed garlic cloves (optional)
finely chopped parsley (optional)
salt
To tahina, add water, lemon juice, salt, cumin and vinegar then stir thoroughly until well blended and a smooth paste will result. Or, dissolve salt in water, then add cumin, lemon juice and vinegar. Stir, then gradually add tahina stirring constantly. Add any or all of the optional ingredients, according to taste. You may also use a blender or food processor at a slow speed.

Orgasmic Punch

Orgasmic Punch
2 bottles of white rum
2/3 liter of dry white wine
1 cup Triple Sec
Juice of 10 oranges
Juice of 6 lemons
20-ounce can of pineapple chunks, drained
1 cup of sugar
2 vanilla bens, split
2 nutmegs, ground
2 oz of muira puama tincture
1-2 oz of damiana tincture
2 whole oranges studded with cloves
A handful of fresh or dried rose petals (optional)
Place the alcohol, juices, pineapple, sugar, vanilla, nutmeg, muira puama, and damiana in a large punch bowl and stir well until sugar is disolved. Carefully float the clove-studded oranges in the punch, and immediately before serving sprinkle with rose petals. Note: the essentials are the damiana and muira puama. Experiment with the rest to find what tastes good to you.

French Toast

For the French Toast:
· 12 slices of fresh brioche, cut 1/3 of an inch in thickness
· 5 whole eggs, beaten together
· 2 cups half and half
· ½ of a Tahitian Vanilla Bean cut in half length-wise
· ½ teaspoon mace
· ½ teaspoon cinnamon
· Some clarified butter to cook the toast (unsalted plain butter works)
Scrape the vanilla seeds out of the bean into the beaten eggs. Add the half-and-half, mace and cinnamon. Beat a bit more. Now slip the slices of brioche into the eggs and allow them to flavor. The amount of time in the eggs will vary depending on the softness of your brioche. The softer, the shorter. Keep covered and refrigerated until ready to prepare the dish.

Some Interesting History

Other types of foods were considered stimulating by their "physical resemblance to genitalia"

It's important to realize these food substances were identified (documented) by the likes of Pliny and Dioscordes (ancient Greeks) first century AD and later by Paul of Aegina from the seventh century.

Getting Technical

Encyclopedia Britannica Article
Aphrodisiac: any of various forms of stimulation thought to arouse sexual excitement. Aphrodisiacs may be classified in two principal groups: (1) psycho-physiological (visual, tactile, olfactory, aural) and (2) internal (stemming from food, alcoholic drinks, drugs, love potions, medical preparations).
Despite long-standing literary and popular interest in internal aphrodisiacs, almost no scientific studies of them have been made. Scientific research is limited to occasional tests of drugs or hormones for the cure of male impotence. Most writings on the subject are little more than unscientific compilations of traditional or folkloric material. Of the various foods to which aphrodisiac powers are traditionally attributed, fish, vegetables, and spices have been the most popular throughout history. In none of these foods, however, have any chemical agents been identified that could effect a direct physiological reaction upon the genitourinary tract, and it must be concluded that the reputation of various supposedly erotic foods is based not upon fact but upon folklore.
It has been suggested that man's universal attribution of libidinous effects to certain foods originated in the ancient belief in the therapeutic efficacy of signatures: if an object resembled the genitalia, it possessed, so it was reasoned, sexual powers. Thus the legendary aphrodisiac powers of ginseng root and powdered rhinoceros horn.
With the exception of certain drugs such as alcohol or marijuana, which may lead to sexual excitation through disinhibition, modern medical science recognizes a very limited number of aphrodisiacs. These are, principally, cantharides and yohimbine, both of which stimulate sexual arousal by irritating the urinary tract when excreted. Cantharides, or cantharidin, consists of the broken dried remains of the blister beetle (q.v.) Lytta vesicatoria. It has been a traditional sexual stimulant fed to male livestock to facilitate breeding. In humans the substance produces skin blisters on contact, and attempts to ingest it as an aphrodisiac are considered extremely hazardous. Yohimbine is a crystalline alkaloid substance derived from the bark of the yohimbé tree (Corynanthe yohimbe) found in central Africa, where it has been used for centuries to increase sexual powers. Although it has been promoted as an aphrodisiac, most investigators feel that any clinical change in sexual powers after its use is probably due to suggestion, because stimulatory effects are elicited only with toxic doses.

Food List

Aniseed
A very popular aphrodisiac with many culinary uses. It has been used as an aphrodisiac since the Greeks and the Romans, who believed aniseed had special powers. Sucking on the seeds is said to increases your desire.
Asparagus
Given it's phallic shape, asparagus is frequently enjoyed as an aphrodisiac food. Feed your lover boiled or steamed spears for a sensuous experience. The Vegetarian Society suggests "eating asparagus for three days for the most powerful affect".
Almond
A symbol of fertility throughout the ages. The aroma is thought to induce passion in a female. Try serving Marzipan (almond paste) in the shapes of fruits for a special after-dinner treat.

Arugula
Arugula or "rocket" seed has been documented as an aphrodisiac since the first century A.D. This ingredient was added to grated orchid bulbs and parsnips and also combined with pine nuts and pistachios. Arugula greens are frequently used in salads and pasta.

Asafetida
Any Indian dried, powedere herb used as a sexual stimulant in Ayurvedic medicine. The herb has a very strong, garlicy flavor.
Avocado
The Aztecs called the avocado tree "Ahuacuatl which translated means "testicle tree". The ancients thought the fruit hanging in pairs on the tree resembled the male's testicles. This is a delicious fruit with a sensuous texture. Serve in slices with a small amount of Balsamic vinegar and freshly ground pepper.
Bananas
The banana flower has a marvelous phallic shape and is partially responsible for popularity of the banana as an aphrodisiac food. An Islamic myth tells the tale that after Adam and Eve succumbed to the "Apple" they started covering their "nudity" with banana leaves rather than fig. From a more practical standpoint bananas are rich in potassium and B vitamins, necessities for sex hormone production.
Basil (sweet basil)
Is said to stimulate the sex drive and boost fertility. It is also said to produce a general sense of well being for body and mind.

Broccoli Rabe (And Other Mustard Greens)
The ground seeds of various plants in the brassica family were believed to increase virility. In the case of broccoli rabe its more likely a myth created to get people to eat this bitter vegetable.

Chocolate
The Aztecs referred to chocolate "nourishment of the Gods". Chocolate contains chemicals thought to effect neurotransmitters in the brain and a related substance to caffeine called theobromine. Chocolate contains more antioxidant (cancer preventing enzymes) than does red wine. The secret for passion is to combine the two. Try a glass of Cabernet with a bit of dark chocolate for a sensuous treat.
Carrots
Another good reason to eat carrots--believed to be a stimulant to the male. The phallus shaped carrot has been associated with stimulation since ancient times and was used by early Middle Eastern royalty to aid seduction. High vitamins and beta-carotene. Perhaps a justification for a piece of carrot cake?
Coffee
Caffeine is a well-know stimulant but remember, too much and it becomes a depressant. Serve small amounts of rich dark coffee in special little demitasse cups. Coffee stimulates both the body and the mind so partake of a little in preparation for an "all-nighter".

Coriander
The book of The Arabian nights tells a tale of a merchant who had been childless for 40 years and but was cured by a concoction that included coriander. That book is over 1000 years old so the history of coriander as an aphrodisiac dates back far into history. Cilantro was also know to be used as an "appetite" stimulant.

Fennel
In the 1930's fennel was found to be a source of natural plant estrogens. Use of fennel as an aphrodisiac dates back to the Egyptian times where it was used as "libido enhancement".

Figs
An open fig is thought to emulate the female sex organs and traditionally thought of as sexual stimulant. A man breaking open a fig and eating it in front of his lover is a powerful erotic act. Serve fresh Black Mission figs in a cool bowl of water as it is done in Italy and be sure to eat with your fingers!
Garlic
The 'heat' in garlic is said to stir sexual desires. Make sure you and your partner share it together. Garlic has been used for centuries to cure everything from the common cold to heart ailments. This is a good time for moderation. Enjoy a pasta with a lightly garlicky sauce and it and lead up to something spicy in the bedroom later.
Ginger
Ginger root raw, cooked or crystallized is a stimulant to the circulatory system. Perhaps a stir-fry with freshly grated ginger can stir something spicy up in the bedroom later.
Honey
Many medicines in Egyptian times were based on honey including cures for sterility and impotence. Medieval seducers plied their partners with Mead, a fermented drink made from honey. Lovers on their "Honeymoon" drank mead and it was thought to s "sweeten" the marriage.
Liquorice (licorice)
The Chinese have used licorice for medicinal purposes since ancient times. The essence of the Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) plan, glycrrhizin, is 50 time sweeter than sugar. Chewing on bits of licorice root is said to enhance love and lust. It is particularly stimulating to woman.
Mustard
Believed to stimulate the sexual glands and increase desire. Prepare a tenderloin roast (filet mignon) for two with a mustard and peppercorn sauce.
Nutmeg
Nutmeg was highly prized by Chinese women as an aphrodisiac. In quantity nutmeg can produce a hallucinogenic effect. A light sprinkling of the spice in a warm pumpkin soup can help spice up your evening.
Oysters
Oysters were documented as a aphrodisiac food by the Romans in the second century A.D as mentioned in a satire by Juvenal. He described the wanton ways of women after ingesting wine and eating "giant oysters". An additional hypotheses is that the oyster resembles the "female" genitals. In reality oysters are a very nutritious and high in protein.
Pine Nuts
Zinc is a key mineral necessary to maintain male potency and pine nuts are rich in zinc. Pine nuts have been used to stimulate the libido as far back as Medieval times. Serve pine nut cookies with a dark espresso for a stimulating dessert.
Pineapple
Rich in vitamin C and and is used in the homeopathic treatment for impotence. Add a spear to a sweet Rum drink for a tasty prelude to an evening of passion.
Raspberries and Strawberries
Perfect foods for hand feeding your lover. "Both invite love and are described in erotic literature as fruit nipples" Both are high in vitamin C and make a sweet light dessert.
Truffles
The Greeks and the Romans considered the rare Truffle to be an aphrodisiac. The musky scent is said to stimulate and sensitize the skin to touch.
Vanilla
The scent and flavor of vanilla is believed to increase lust. According to the Australian Orchid Society, "Old Totonac lore has it that Xanat, the young daughter of the Mexican fertility goddess, loved a Totonac youth. Unable to marry him due to her divine nature, she transformed herself into a plant that would provide pleasure and happiness." Fill tall Champagne glasses to the rim and add a vanilla bean for a heady, bubbly treat.
Wine
A glass or two of wine can greatly enhance a romantic interlude. Wine relaxes and helps to stimulate our senses. Drinking wine can be an erotic experience. Let your eyes feast on the color of the liquid. Caress the glass, savor the taste on your lips.
